The secretary general of the Somali Congress of Trade Unions (SOCOTU) has attended a workshop on the transition from the informal economy to the formal economy organised by the International labour organization(ILO) and the East African Trade Union confederation(EATUC). The workshop discussed the challenges facing informal economy workers and the best avenues that the transition can be achieved successfully. The ILO recommendation 204 concerning this transition was discussed. Participant countries gave their reports on the status of the informal economy in their countries.
The workshop participants debated the role of the tripartite partners and their contribution to this shift. Trade unions present urged governments to give necessary documentation and provide spaces to informal economy workers to operate in. They also sited that unionization should be encouraged to ensure that the rights of the informal economy workers are protected.
